Google to sell Software online – Competition Microsoft?

27 04 2007

Google is starting a suite of programs with word processing, email, spreadsheets, calendar management, etc soon.  $50 per user/year will be the cost.  There is a difference between what you get out of the box from Microsoft and Google’s product!  The difference?  Its online!

I guess if your connection is okay it would be fine, but if your connection is slow I can see that almost slowing things down a bit at the office!  Also it might take a while for people to be willing to do this online, because of privacy issues for companies.  I guess we will SEE won’t we!  It seems targeted towards bigger businesses from what I have read, but since it is so new WHO KNOWS!  I bet in time it could expand if it takes off.  I can see people paying $50 to get the most up to date software, and just think about it…….never having to purchase the latest and greatest ever again!  Hmmm.

Google does say they are NOT in competition with Microsoft, because they are going into a niche in a different area.  LOL Not so sure Microsoft is buying that if I know them!

I have to say this is going to be something worth watching!  LOL It will be interesting to say the least!

Google has been offering a free version of its online software suite called Google Apps for the past six months. More than 100,000 small businesses and hundreds of universities nationwide are using the free service, Google said.

The fee-based version, Google Apps Premier Edition, includes five times more e-mail storage — 10 gigabytes per e-mail box — as well as a guarantee that all services will be available 99.9 percent of the time with around-the-clock technical support. Google also is adding mobile access to e-mail accounts through the BlackBerry devices that tether workers to their offices.

“This is a big step for us, but I think it’s a reasonable step,” Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said in an interview Wednesday. “Our product is so cheap that it’s sort of no-brainer to try it out.”
