Domestic abuse in the church

30 05 2007

I found a video on Focus Ministries on You Tube.  It touches on some of the awesome things they do, and also educates its viewers on what domestic abuse is.   This is the ministry we started the store, and this blog to support and help continue to aid in their financial need!

Do you Squidoo? Could help your Traffic!

29 05 2007

For the last couple of days I have been helping a partner from another site Emotional Abuse and Your Faith put up some Squidoo pages.  It seems to be fairly simple, and easy to do!  Its nice because they do have a blog going into more detail, and also a forum you can go to and ask questions!  Use your keywords, and you also need (at times) some basic HTML.

When you read the squidoo site they speak about ‘lens’, and basically all that means is a web page!  We took a couple of her pages, and a couple of new articles that she wrote and placed them on squidoo.  As we searched around a bit we found new ways of doing this to gain some income.  YES squidoo will pay you for being there!  They have adsense articles on your page, and you also can choose some advertisers as well. You have a choice of either pocketing the cash, donating it to a charity, and part of it to a charity.

You can use up to 40 keywords, and like most other places you use visit some other pages to get an idea of HOW they format, and what keywords they use.    We used her articles to promote BOTH her blog (Emotional Abuse and Your Faith), this blog (Nice Used Clothes For Charity), and the store (Ecrater – Nice Used Clothes For Charity) we write about here.  I haven’t checked with her, but I have noticed that I got some hits from it already here!  Our ranking when we placed the articles on there at the beginning was +100,000, and it has risen to +20,000 in a couple of days.

We both figured out HOW to do the pages, and this morning I submitted them to search engines and blog engines as well!  I sent out a couple of emails to friends about it, and she is going to place her pages on her blog.  This week I plan on placing some advertising for the store on there.

Here are a couple of her pages:

MSN Product Upload Issues that I see – What about you?

20 05 2007

I got an email from MSN recently reminding me that there had not no activity on my account that I had signed up for.  To be perfectly honest I was a bit overwhelmed, and had MORE questions than answers when it came to their help section.  I also found that Ecrater stores are automatically being taken care of by the admins of that site!  PRETTY AWESOME HUH?  The problem I ran into was the images!  If you do any reading at all it seems to be a pretty good bottleneck for them.  Here is a quote I found on their site:

Why aren’t there 100% images in the top results? The reason is largely because many sites, including very reputable merchants like,, and, block image crawling bots or seriously throttle them. We will have to work with these sites to address these issues, but the latest improvements in the number of Product Search top results with images are already quite significant.

So according to them everyone’s images are NOT capable with their system.  You don’t have issues other places, but with them you do.  I would think MSN would fix things on their end instead of asking others to change their system that seems to work other places.

Anyway, they also mentioned in the email that they are now taking googlebase uploads.  I figured I would give them a shot, because of the images being missing on the products that ecrater sent over to them.  I have different categories like men, ladies, children, books, trophy, etc so I couldn’t place a category in there for them.  Category is in the data feed itself, so i wondered WHY they asked for it!  Maybe they want us to break it up – I’m not sure.  I did submit the googlebase file to them on Friday.  Today is Sunday and they are STILL processing it!  The screen says 36 hours, but my file is rather small compared to some.  I really wonder WHY it would take that long as well.

If they want new files to come to them, and it is going to take 36 hours for them to process it I plan on breaking my list up and giving it to them in sections.  Everyday or so I will supply them with a new list.  THAT IS if the picture issue is taken care of!

If you have been reading for a while I sent googlebase a question about their google checkout.  According to the last email I receive from them if you set up a datafeed (bulk upload), and your items when clicked automatically send people to your store you can’t be counted as a company that offers google checkout.  Only the items you place on googlebase manually would be allowed that.  I know for a fact that isn’t TRUE!  I questioned them with links to examples, and of course no response.  I’m going to send it again!

Back to subject – will MSN take care of the image issue?  I sure hope so!  I will see if my image issue is taken care of once they are done ‘processing’ my feed.  Bleck!  36 hours is way to long! Another major bottleneck in my eyes!

I found a rather humorous thread last night, and wanted to share! How little rednecks become big rednecks!   I still was giggling this morning after reading it again!

Domestic Abuse or Violence within the Faith Realm

8 05 2007

I’m going off topic today just because this store, and this blog were started due to this topic.
Society as a whole seems to have a really hard time with this subject!  I’m not going to say they think some person should stick around while they get the crud kicked out them, but their remedies and solutions are very unrealistic!  The definitions of domestic abuse or violence at times are very narrow as well.  Gender is one of the first that comes to mind, and it still amazes me that people think that females are the only ones affected by this!  Society has these stereotypical roles that men are placed in, and so they could never be affected otherwise they must be some sort of wimp!  The other definition I find is that beating is the only true one.  The threat of violence or the feeling threatened isn’t included.  When you get popped we will TALK!  WOW!
We have movies, stories in books, news stories showing all the time how people’s hands are tied due to the fact nothing violent has happened yet!  EVERYONE can see it coming in time, but if you have smart perpetrator they won’t go there most of the time!  Everyone’s hands are tied!  The perpetrator KNOWS where the line is drawn!  It’s like a cat that knows where the dog chain ends, and how far he can come forward.  Silently shows off this control by rolling in grass inches from where the dog can’t get him!  The cat ‘technically’ isn’t in danger, and is doing nothing wrong because the cat isn’t within the dog’s territory!  In the new stories we hear about you can’t do anything, because technically no laws have been broken!  In school’s children are encouraged to seek help if they feel threatened.  At times you can do things to help, and in other realms your hands are tied!  They do have some actions they can take at times to help!  Everyone gets all up in arms when things finally DO happen, and scream WHAT CAN WE DO TO PREVENT THIS?  At times you have ways of preventing it, and in others the rules are basically holding our hands behind our backs!  You see other circumstances in which these may not always be the case, and people do things to prevent tragedies!  We tend to tie the hands of abusers and victims in much the same manner everyday with this same thinking.  Its funny how we can change certain things, and we don’t!
Society also places blind spots up for themselves so they don’t have face issues that are just to overwhelming to bear for them!  You see this with answers for all kinds of issues!  I remember once years ago, and they were doing a campaign for the hungry and comments were made “Why don’t they just move?” as a solution.  They never stopped to realize that they don’t have a way to move, they don’t have the resources to move, and they also have no place to go!  “Why don’t they protest?” they say!  Lets see..Hmmm… do they have the local office max there to shop for cardboard signs to right on?  NO!  Do they have the communication to bring people together to do this?  Most cases NOT!  They start to ask more and more things, and when they finally realize how overwhelming the subject is they either maybe hand them some money, or run the opposite direction because they can’t process it now!  Most don’t stop long enough to do it in the future either!  Their answer of “They can just move if they were smart” works for them.
When it comes to domestic abuse or violence I see the same things happening!  Abuse can be a very over used word, and at times isn’t used the way it should be!  I have read articles in which author’s claim that victims of verbal and emotional abuse are fakes, and an insult to those victims of true abuse!  There was a special on 20/20 that was posted to youtube about a family that lived with all of the above!  One day the husband instructed the son to pick up a camera to film his rages towards his mother, because he didn’t like the way she asked him what he would like for lunch!  Did the whole show include this man battering her?  NO it didn’t!  It does give you a clue what emotional and verbal abuse is!  Majority of this scene it was used!  At the end YES this man did beat his wife!  The husband was going to use this as a tool for family night to show the kids what mommy did, and how she was bad!  She knew she was going to get it, and her fear it seemed kept her frozen in fear.  She also didn’t want to push too much because her children were present, and didn’t want them in the middle of this.  She grew up in a family with an overwhelming father, and to her in some ways it was the norm!  Would she agree with other’s opinions of verbal and emotional abuse?  No.  It’s funny how the statement still persists about how it is really a non-issue though!  Someone calling you a name on occasion hurts YES, but imagine living within the home that most of the time you are degraded, humiliated, etc.  We all have our days in which we can be ugly, nasty and cruel…but is it your life style?  It is part of your emotional habit pattern makeup?  It’s like others forget the saying, “you never know what goes on behind closed doors!”  They don’t see the person as the monster they hear about, so others MUST be over the top in their complaints!  Admit it we have ALL done it one time or another when it comes this subject or something else!
Within the faith realm you have all the normal society factors, but you have some extra burdens to carry as well.  Most would request that ladies to go a shelter if they are in danger.  At times the church would also, but they are secular and don’t like doing that!  They may call for separation, but believe it should be short term otherwise it encouraged divorce!  They will separate the couple, and then go ‘have a word with him’.  Their hearts in a right place, but what they don’t realize is that doesn’t take away the root within the person to abuse!  In most cases it may cool them off for a while, but the root cause of the abuse will never be addressed.  When the family returns the control is tightened, and since no real help was given the first time around they tend to NOT repeat their dangers in the future to others!  The abuser made sure they knew how they would pay for it!  The church doesn’t even realize what they did!  When I read stories of people in very serious situations I read things like, “What did you do before this happened?”  Can you imagine asking that lady from the 20/20 show that?  “We only know one side of the story here!”  “Pray to be a better spouse, and your fruits will be noticed and the change can begin!”  The church at times ignores this issue more than society does!  I have to admit it looks like MOST of the time that is the case!
Focus Ministries deals with those within the church that are hidden because the church it seems wishes them to be hidden!  They get a lot of calls from Pastor’s wives that are being abused, as the church turns their heads.  There is a lot of pressure to keep this relationship together, and I personally believe that families SHOULD stay together!  If they don’t in cases of abuse divorce isn’t what broke the family up – the abuse did!  In most cases you have one that doesn’t do much to change themselves inside for the family to continue as a unit.  The children within that union learn that they must tolerate abuse because of the church’s teachings, and the cycle will continue.  Focus Ministries helps those that wish to stop the cycle.  They help those that stay in or get out!
In closing I am going to quote part of the letter they sent out.  If you can send $1.00 or more they could use the money!  If you purchase from our store we use that for this purpose as well!  We are NOT affiliated with them, so if you need the tax write-off go directly to them!  If you need materials to educate your staff or church about this issue they have wonderful resources!

As we witness the trauma of human suffering, our question is not “Where is God?” but “Where are God’s people?”

Our hearts are broken as we write to you. Every day, either online, by phone,or in person, we encounter women from all over the world who are terrorized in their own homes. Many of these women are pastors’ wives. They often have no one to turn to so they reach out anonymously on our online forum or by phone thousands of miles away.

One dear lady called our Women’s Center in Kentucky from somewhere in Africa. As she told her story of working multiple jobs while her pastor husband refused to work, she had just one request. “Please pray with me.”

Can you imagine the scene from heaven’s perspective? A telephone line created a connection between two women—one in Africa, and the other in a small town in Kentucky—and heaven itself! Their conversation transcended the mundane things of earth and approached the throne of God with pleadings and tears Did God hear? I believe He did. “O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.” Psalm 10:17 ESV

When you hear the cries of the broken and hurting, how do you respond? Are you willing to give up some of your comfort to make a difference in the life of another?

When a plaintiff sues a tobacco company for damages caused by smoking, the trial turns into a showdown between the tobacco industries and the largest personal injury firms in the country. Billions of dollars are at stake and each side is spending millions to insure victory. But even the most experienced trial watchers are confused when the jury begins behaving oddly and a mysterious woman named Marlee is the only person able to predict their behavior in advance. Who is controlling the jury, and what is their motive? Marlee is the only one with any answers, and she’s not talking.

Publisher’s Note
Every jury has a leader, and the verdict belongs to him. In Biloxi, Mississippi, a landmark tobacco trial with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake beginsroutinely, then swerves mysteriously off course. The jury is behaving strangely, and at least one juroris convinced hes being watched. Soon they have to be sequestered. Then a tip from an anonymousyoung woman suggests she is able to predict the jurors’ increasingly odd behavior. Is the jury somehow being manipulated, or even controlled? If so, by whom? And, more important, why?

Industry reviews
“The story’s suspense builds like that of a lengthening cigarette ash that refuses to drop off. And the plot’s eventual outcome is far more entertaining than anything Mr. Grisham has done before.”
New York Times – Christopher Lehmann- Haupt (05/23/1996)

“If Grisham has made any innovation in the genre, it is that he concentrates even more exclusively on lawyers than do his rivals and imitators.”
Spectator – David Sexton (05/18/1996)

“He [Grisham] still makes the reader flip the pages at an Olympic Pace, but now he finds other ways, as he did in ‘The Rainmaker’, to move the story along without hysterical chases and things going bump in the night….The quieter Grisham still fascinates, as he deftly keeps the reader guessing about the mystery juror’s identity and motive. Grisham tells an addictive tale that will have you hooked until the very last surprise.”

Focus Ministries

This one of the pictures you will see once you get to their website.  I think first of all I need to mention they are not a part of Focus on the Family organization.  I have noticed alot of people assume this due to the ‘focus’ part in their name.  I believe they do work together at times.

This ministry handles domestic abuse or spouse abuse for women.  They have a special section for Pastor’s wifes as well!  They have an awesome section for articles that people can read to remind them of God’s love for them right on the website.  They have a board that is closed to the public for ladies that would like support online.  You can email them, call them, or read about them right from your computer.

Domestic abuse is a very complicated issue, and it seems to get even more so when you add the faith factor to it.  Focus Ministries has staff that can train your church staff on this subject, and also has support literature that you can purchase from their site.  They have been featured in Christian Counseling Today magazine with articles like: Domestic Voilence among believers.   They have a very committed staff, and have two locations (IL, KY).

I find when churches are approached with this type of situation alot of times they unknowingly do things to make things worse instead of better.  Its not a realm that is easily handled, and from what I have seen and heard they tend to either place the burden back on the women OR “have a word” with the man.  Alot of things they do seems so much like common sense, and yet we have to remember we are not entering a world where common sense, logic, and reality is in its true form.  Well respected people from the church could be very different behind closed doors, and the members of that church just can’t see past that image once this issue comes into the light.  To be honest its human nature at times isn’t it?

They have a number of options for purchase, or viewing online such as:

I find myself when reading articles either online, or boards geared towards faith with opinions on how this situation needs to be handled.  It really saddens me to see such ignorance out there, and I have to be very honest with you – I at one time was in the same boat as they are NOW!  I believed alot of the myths, and used things that would seem to make sense in everyday life.  I have to admit I was a bit shocked when I found people claiming if the women would be more submissive (for example) he wouldn’t beat her and/or the children.  If she would pray to be a better wife, cook his favorite dinner, do her duty in the bedroom this evil within him would leave.  They ask questions of her like, “What did you do to make him so mad?”.  LOL As if whatever was done is a good enough excuse for domestic abuse!

I think the best description of it that I have heard was from a sermon from Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer at Moody Bible Church was their “root of rage”.  He did a sermon called the “Destructive Secret”.  I came across a blogger speaking about a posting that was read on a faith board.  It was as if people were telling the wife to ignore her feelings, wants and dont’ communicate those to her spouse!  You see her spouse didn’t like what she wanted to speak about, and the subject matter was more than reasonable – and important to her!  The author points out that people SCREAM communication, and yet you received advice like HUSH if it will get them upset to talk about it!  Dicussion link here.

The above was minor compared to alot of the items that Focus Ministries deals with, but you can see the beginnings of trouble in the discussion I mentioned also.  I have to be honest I do believe it is fear that causes so many to go into denial over this issue.  LOL Can’t say that I blame them!  Its a scarey subject, and at times there doesn’t seem to be any good answers to it!

I want to mention right now that I don’t believe abuse is a gender issue.  There are alot of men out there in domestic abuse situations as well.  I think more education will be coming out regarding that aspect as well.  I truly think in alot of ways men have been neglected in this area when they were the victims.  I have to wonder if it isn’t the world’s image of “male ego” or “pride”.  It’s silly whatever it is!

Anyway – after my long winded and all over the place mention on the blog TODAY if you don’t see anything in the store that’s fine….consider a donation to the Focus Minstries directly!  They are truly doing God’s work!

Thank you!

Title Tag Page for your store

5 04 2007

I’m going to go at this Section one at a time.  I’m not sure about some items, and as I figure them out I will pass that along!

What is the title page you ask?

If you look on top of your screen you will see something along the lines of my article title that you are reading: Title Tag Page for your store – and then it will mention my blog name: Nice Used Clothes For Charity.  WordPress does this for you automatically, but in Ecrater you must place what text you want in that space.

You ever notice on some sites they say, “WELCOME!!” and some message?  THAT is part of their title page!  Basically this is this is the text that is displayed in the top section of the browser when you open a certain page.

I found an interesting article on title tags!

Pet Free, Smoke Free, Never Stored in Scent?

4 04 2007

Comes from a Pet Free, Smoke Free Home and this Item has NEVER been stored among any Scented Products I never thought of this before honestly!

Some people have really bad allergies to things that are scented.  From what I have read a lot of people ship clothes with dryer sheets to keep them smelling fresh.  I guess that is a nice idea overall, but if you have someone that can’t handle the smell…or may be allergic that could be an issue!  I read a thread recently that commented on this.  The poster got odd reactions I thought.  “If you are THAT sensitive go to the MALL!”  OUCH!

I have family members that are major sensitive to things like that.  They have also mentioned certain laundry soaps makes them breakout, get rashes, etc.  Soaps with fragrances are so popular!  I have noticed a lot of new products with no fragrances, and claim to be allergy free.  I think I might consider buying those.  They do clean the same way… and clean just as well!

Here are a few comments I thought were worth noting.

 ·          The fragrance on a Dryer Sheet is especially tenacious and very difficult to remove, much more so than perfumes or cooking odors.
Also, the sheet transfers allergens onto the clothing so that, if the item is not dry cleaned or washed before wearing, these irritants may redden the skin of some people.  Eliminating these sheets is simply a kindness that would be appreciated by many buyers.

·          I mostly buy NWT. Sometimes these items have actually arrived with sheets in between the items.  When this happens, I wash the item. Once I had to dry clean a sweater because the dryer sheet odor would not come out after several washings. It still remained even after a washing and a dry cleaning. I had to give it away. This particular item was packed with several sheets. The seller meant well and thought she was giving a buyer a nice-smelling piece of clothing. But, not everyone agrees with everyone else’s idea of a lovely fragrance.

·          There is an anti-static sheet for the dryer that doesn’t use chemicals and last for 500 loads. I’m going to check into that at the Home Goods store. I also just switched to Tide Free. My oldest has always sensitive skin that reddens easily. I wonder if the dryer sheets are contributing to her skin irritation?

·          GOOD INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS and Dryer Sheets

The clothes dryer stopped drying. The repairman went
to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean.
We always clean the lint from the filter after every load
of clothes.
He told us that he wanted to show us something.
He took the filter over to the sink, and ran hot water
over it. I am sure you know what your dryer’s lint filter
looks like. WELL…the hot water just sat on top of
the screen! It did not go through it at all!
He told us that dryer sheets cause a waxy film to build
up over the screen, and this does not let the air pass
through, so the heating unit overheats and burns out.
You cannot see the film, but it’s there. This is also can
cause dryers to catch fire, and potentially burn your
house down with it! He said the best way to keep
your dryer working for a very long time (and to keep
your electric bill lower because your clothes will dry
faster) is to clean that filter after every load, and
wash it with hot soapy water with an old toothbrush
(or other brush) every three months. He said that
makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long!
How about that! Learn something new every day!
I certainly didn’t know dryer sheets would do that.
So, I thought I’d share!
NOTE: A few days later I went to my dryer and
tested my screen by running water on it. The
water ran thru a little bit but mostly collected all
the water in the mesh screen. I washed it with
warm soapy water and a nylon brush and I had it
done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it the
water ran right thru the screen! There wasn’t any
puddle of water at all!
That repairman knew what he was talking about!

I personally don’t have a problem using something that doesn’t have purfumes, scents, etc.  It may be worth noting in my sales or auctions.  I think have to think on that a bit!  For now, I think I will just use up the soap I have in the house presently!
